When Drake dropped “Summer Sixteen” on his Beats1 radio show back in January, it’s unlikely anyone listening expected the dominance that we’re currently witnessing. Though summer didn’t officially start until today, Drizzy’s fourth studio album, Views, dropped in the final days of April just when the weather started turning, and he’s been unrelenting on the charts ever since. Views is #1 on the Billboard 200 for the 7th consecutive week, a ridiculous feat, especially considering this week he fended off another viable pop star, Nick Jonas, who dropped his second solo album, Last Year Was Complicated. It’s been 7 weeks at #1 for Views and it’s been 7 weeks since the album was released, which is easy math to understand. No album not namedViews has been #1 since Views dropped. Impressive.
As far as the Hot 100 goes, there isn’t much of a surprise there either. “One Dance” is #1 for the 6th time—five of those weeks were consecutive, damn that Justin Timberlake—and we still don’t have a music video for the song, which means “One Dance” fever isn’t about to subside any time soon. Chances are, it’ll give the song new life in the same manner that the “Hotline Bling” video did, especially if Drake is executing his particular brand of goofy dance moves on set.
As far as potential Drake challengers go? The list is mighty short. Despite YG‘s stardom, his sophomore album, Still Brazy, doesn’t appear to have a shot, and with albums from Rihanna,Beyonce and Kanye West already out of the way, it could be another few weeks before we’re reporting that something other than Views is the #1 album in the country.
